Taiwan, a view with South Korea in mind

Rex How

Rex How

Publisher / Author

Born in Korea, Rex How moved to Taiwan for university and has lived there for nearly fifty years. Having lived experiences in both cultures, How asks: In what ways are South Korean society and Taiwanese society different, despite sharing similar historical trajectories?

The book Taiwan Unbound reminds the world that Taiwan is an island surrounded on all four sides by water, and the empowerment of existing amidst the sea. How explores the freedom and boldness of the water, which can be found in many Taiwanese women, the subject of the photography anthology “Tai-Niu.” South Korean reporter Lee Yong-ma’s book “I Believe the World Can Change” holds up a mirror for the Taiwanese to confront themselves and their tomorrows. Following Pope Francis’ biography and reflecting on today’s society, How challenges the future to “Let Us Dream.”

Join Rex How as he uses his insight as a publisher and author to introduce seven books to guide us through an understanding of the differences between Taiwan and South Korea—their people, and their futures.

About The Artist

Founder and Chairman of Locus Publishing, and Net and Books / Writer / Comic Playwright

How was born in Busan Metropolitan City (or Pusan), South Korea. In 1974, he studied at National Taiwan University, where he later completed his Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree in International Trade. After graduation, How entered the publishing industry. He started working as an editor, and then became the chief editor of 2001 Magazine, as well as the chief editor of Productivity Magazine.

In 1989, using the pen name of Ma-Li as a comic playwright, he collaborated with comic artist Chen Uen for the comic, Abi Sword. In 2008, he started publishing the serial novel Abi Sword prelude on his personal website. In addition, during his tenure at China Times Publishing Company, How introduced many Japanese comic titles, including the Complete Manga Works of Tezuka Osamu.

On December 8, 2003, How wrote and published an open letter in China Times, addressed to Taiwan’s publishing industry and the Government Information Office to raise awareness of the importance of the Taipei International Book Exhibition. The next year, Taipei Book Fair Foundation (TBFF) was founded and he was appointed the President of the foundation.

In 2009, How was appointed as a National Policy Advisor for the Republic of China, Taiwan. After four years of advising on art, cultural, and social issues, he resigned in 2013. However, this did not mean his attention to society decreased.

The curiosity How holds for Taiwan remains, and he continues to explore Taiwanese society with enthusiasm. No matter what role he plays, How will continue to work hard in contributing to the current society and help more people stand firmly on their own feet. His background of growing up in South Korea has taught him the courage to act; the diversity of Taiwan has allowed him to reach out with open hands and move towards an ever-changing future.
