Docile and graceful, sea turtles hold a deservedly special place in our hearts and imagination. The beaches where they breed are often separated from their feeding grounds by thousands of kilometers of open sea. Moreover, much about their development through adolescence is still a mystery. In fact, there is so much regarding these gentle creatures that remains unknown and under investigation. The ancient, long-lived sea turtle has been woven into countless cultural and religious traditions, and its stylized form can be found today in temples, markets, and other public spaces. Although much about them remains unknown, they are a source of endless wonder and imagination for their terrestrial onlookers. As a critical environmental indicator species, sea turtles provide unambiguous evidence of the multifaceted threats facing our planet’s marine environments. Their high-profile plight has rallied people worldwide to work collectively toward effective solutions and has helped change our behavior. The modern importance of sea turtles has not only made the shared story of humans and sea turtles even more moving but also potentially opened a path to salvation for both them and us. This is the fundamental value in documenting our blessed sea turtles.
